If Brooklyn belongs to Biggie then Montreal definitely belongs to Bad News Brown. Hundreds of fans came out to pay homage to the late, great one and you could feel his presence in the room every time his face adorned the big screen and voice cut through the speakers. Congratulations to Henri and all the performers for putting on a tribute show that was truly fitting of the city’s brightest star.
The Bad…
As beautiful as the show was, by night’s end, we couldn’t escape the reality of losing a legendary performer whose career was reaching new heights. Bad News had just completed his first film role and was working on a new album before he was killed. Bumrush was released shortly after his demise and hopefully we see a new BNB album some time in the near future.
The Burning Question…
Don't worry about Brooklyn I continue the flame
Therefore a world with amnesia won't forget your name
You held it down long enough, let me take those reigns
And just like your spirit the commission remains
- Jay-Z
I never was quite comfortable with how eagerly Jay claimed the King of NY title after B.I.G.’s death, but one can’t help but wonder when Montreal will see another artist of BNB’s caliber. Bad News was supremely talented yet disarmingly humble. His legacy, much like Biggie’s, went beyond the music.
He will forever be remembered as a trail blazer, a pioneer, a role model and beloved figure in the community. We continue to strive in his name and recognize that some shoes just aren’t meant to be filled.
