I was enjoying a hot shower from a hard day’s work, mulling over how to tell the readers how I feel about The Roots’ latest album How I Got Over. Should I start off by cracking a little joke or maybe just come out and say it? Twenty minutes later, I sit in front of my laptop ready to tell you this album is straight boring.
The Roots is one of the best hip hop groups of our time. The How I Got Over beats are on point. The lyrics and musicality are top notch..
However, if you love hip hop as much as I do, sometimes you need a little more that. I’m talking about the raw energy generated from blasting songs from your speakers. Their latest album doesn’t give me that excitement but it’s a good listen. “The Day” is one of my favorite songs. That song and the intro are really the only tracks I can play all day. The rest of the album I can pretty much skip.
If it weren’t for the posse cuts featuring lyricists like Blu, Phonte & Dice Raw,this album would be the equivalent of asking Tim Horton’s for a Double Double of Nyquil Nighttime, with just a pinch of brown sugar.
If you want a laid back album to run in the background while you chill out, then go for it. If you’re looking for something with a few more tracks to get you amped for what’s ahead in your day, you might want to listen to something with a bit more pep to it.
That’s just what I’m saying, Peace. Favorite Tracks: The Day, A Peace of Light, Right On
