"Yes a Breath of Fresh Air"

“Yes a breath of fresh air”, On Saturday the 26th of September, I was shown that Hip-Hop still lives in the underground scene of Montreal. Petite Campus was a safe haven for real Hip-Hop heads to freely listen to uncommercialized music as originality performed in its purest form. Siku Knowledge and Mestizo opened the night, this was there first time performing together in 8 years; this dynamic duo was packed with originality as their political lyrics kept the audience engaged. I was left stunned as I listened to these hip hop artist encompassing life events, spitting that hot stuff on various beats, and demonstrating their musical genius as they continuously exhibited varied stylistic flows.

Type Cast was the next band to perform, TypeCast is real funk and Hip-Hop. Their soulful approach to music had people on the dance floor moving to the music, and those unable to find space on the crowded dance floor could only gaze in amazement as they bobbed their heads and tapped their feet to the rhythm. The MC’S for TypeCast are ill, they were beat boxing, rhyming while playing the acoustic guitar, or showing the crowd some dance moves.

The highly anticipated and patiently awaited Preach Ankobia finally took the stage accompanied by members of Kalmunity collective and a surprise to many actor Tristan D. Lalla as a backup vocalist. Preach Ankobia also performed with ACAPA and SLIM. The opening of his set was one to remember for the ages, the immediate stage presence was highly intense. Preach Ankobia is not only an MC but also a storyteller; he truly educates many with his articulated verses packed with knowledge.

After watching Preach Ankobia perform, I can only conclude that he is Hip-Hop to the fullest, his style is truly unique as he encompasses his west Indian culture. I am happy to say that I am proud to be witnessing history in the making.
