The Kid Famous took some time for an interview with Morburn in which he talked about his latest short film "GoddessGirl" (goddessgirlmovie.com), the biz side of two cities and his legacy.
Q. What’s good man, welcome to Morburn how you feeling?
A. Tired!!! It’s 4:30am on a Friday night. Happy, cause the Raptors won. And absolutely murdering new Boi1da, Tone Mason and Soundsmith beats. Other then that, I'm about to take a nap
Q. For those that don’t know, you are originally from Montreal. How did you come to the decision to make the move to Toronto?
A. I mean, for me it was a career move and the obvious thing would be to move to the bigger city with an urban culture, being in the Entertainment Business. I graduated from Trebas and Janie McGarrigle (R.I.P. her sister) handed my resume to the President of Universal Music and I got the call on a Thursday, Interview on a Friday and packed my bags and left to start Monday in Toronto, while my family was on vacation. GONE!
Q. Can you talk a bit about the business side of your career, what were you able to do in Toronto that you couldn’t do in Montreal?
A. Intern for 2 Major Record Labels (Universal & SonyBmg) and work at the ONLY hip-hop urban station in the COUNTRY reaching over 500,000 ‘urban Anglophone’ listeners.
Q. Your debut project the “I Rap Now EP” got a lot of attention. Did you ever anticipate such a good response for your first EP?
A. I mean you always hope for things to go right, but as an artist ‘not a rapper’, the most you can do is be creative and it either sticks or it doesn’t. The EP was 5 songs produced by Grammy Award producers (Tone Mason, Boi1da) and each song had a video with a different concept, which told you the story of The Kid turn Famous. ‘Ain’t No Use’ was nominated for a Much Music Video Award and the EP got me a JUNO Nomination making me “The first independent solo artist in the history of Canadian music to be nominated for a Juno and a Much Music video award off a debut EP. All in one year!
Q. In addition to being a successful artist you’re also an accomplished club MC. Is that something you see yourself doing as your career progresses?
A. I like to party, feel me! You want to book me to do something I enjoy and get others enjoying themselves…that’s cool with me. I love all sorts of music and those who like to party have a great night with the kid. My mom always told me shut up, but knew I would make a living off talking!
Q. How did you come up with the idea behind the “Goddess Girl” project?
A. I like to say ‘rapper things’. “Great minds discuss ideas, lesser minds just follow and bad minds talk shit” – Haters Eulogy. I always brainstorm ideas and figured we couldn’t do a video for every song like the I Rap Now EP so we figured create .50sec visuals describing the mood for every song. Each week for 8 weeks we would release a scene.
Q. With so much going on it’s hard to believe anyone has any time to themselves. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
A. Sleeping and watching Ball. I'm also getting into cooking; I make a mean chicken stir fry!
Q. Having a drive to succeed and a unique style can propel you to the top. What do you have to offer to the game that differs from what we see and hear every day?
A. I mean…… I’m different. There’s nobody like me. God created one of me. I’m in competition with nobody but myself. So I guess what I'm saying is all I have to offer is ME!
Q. Morburn would like to once again thank Famous for chatting with us. Famous, do you have any last words for the massive?
A. Biggup MTL! Ken Diggy and Masters At Work, Chops and of course Morburn. My Mtl brothers, my T-dot family. And remember I’m living life and loving it so “don’t hate me cause I rhyme different”
