I guess I hate Kobe

Kobe of LA LakersLet me start off by saying Kobe Bryant is one of, if not the best player in his generation. He’s got, playoff appearances, an MVP and All Star awards, championships and a multitude of individual awards and records. When it’s all said and done he might even be top 5 ever!  I don't hate Kobe for petty reasons, he’s obviously supremely talented. But for some reason I just can’t root for the guy.

How can you not root for a champion, a three time champion? Maybe it’s not Kobe at all, maybe it’s me. Maybe I can accept that one day Lebron James or some other superstar will eventually surpass Michael Jordan in greatness… just as long as that person is not Kobe.

He comes off as so artificial, watching him play I can’t help but say, I’ve seen this before. In basketball the players with the most imagination on the court are usually the most popular. Dr. Jay, Magic, Pistol Pete, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, Kobe?  It’s almost as if he’s trying so hard to be like Mike, how about trying to be Kobe, the problem what does that even mean?

As a fan you sort of feel like the person your cheering for is someone you can picture yourself hanging out with. If you liked Larry Bird you could pictures yourselves having a few beers at Cheers. For Magic Johnson fans you would be hitting Hollywood Boulevard in the 80’s. With Mj you might be hitting the golf course having a cigar and talking about all sorts of sports. What the hell would you do with Kobe? Play 1 on 1 and hope you don’t take an elbow from him? Truth be told, I would rather hang out with Tim Duncan than Kobe Bryant.

I really have tried in the past to defend Kobe, really. He’s clutch, he’s a killer (on the court) he always takes the teams best wing player. He’ll do anything to win…anything! See for yourself click here, watch kobe in action .  You really have to admire his drive; he really wants to be the best out there.  With 10 seconds or less there’s no one better in the league than Kobe that, I will admit. He probably has the most killer instinct since Jordan and his skill set is most likely top 10 all time. So why can’t I root for him. Maybe we should stop comparing him to Jordan, skill wise maybe but personality wise never.

I guess a good comparison would be A-Rod, even before the steroids people hated him. He just seems like real jerk. Maybe that’s the answer right there, despite all of his physical gifts, his drive and passion for the game, his mental and physical approach to each game and playoff series Kobe, just comes off as a jerk.
