I got a lot of praise and maybe just as much criticism for my last editorial here on Morburn named “Dear Montreal Rappers”. Knowing that I could help enlighten even ONE artist motivated me to go forward and keep telling the truth.
A great many resources are available to Canadian musical artists of all genres; it's up to the artists and their respective business teams to take advantage of them. The United States of America seems like the Holy Grail to many artists because of its size and because it's the "Land of Opportunity". How about you take advantage of the opportunities presented to you here? Know them, understand them and use them. And if you can't do any of these three, find and trust someone who can do it with and for you.
Lots of artists think that starting in the States will boost their careers quickly. You’re right, it will. BUT! How will you get there? You can move there of course. But you’ll find yourself amongst all the other wannabe artists who have the same goals and hunger as you. A more sensible way might be to network and exchange. Find out what’s REALLY going on there – you’ll find out they live the same struggles as you except they’re trying to take over more than just their city.
Montreal is small. It's an island. It's a box. Step out of it for a second and look in.. and now tell me what you see.
Sincerely, KJ
