Q. We got muGz in the building, welcome to Morburn. How you feeling man?
A. I’m feelin real productive at the moment! Black Rose is the new label and GUARDIANANGEL is my first official music video that we recently dropped which was a great experience! But I’m sure we’ll get into that much later…..
Q. Lets start at the beginning, you’re 17 and you’ve just been signed to H-Cap music. What’s going through your head?
A. I’m thinkin…my older cousin is my boss/idol…what could go wrong? H-Cap is about to takeover the industry…I was excited to be apart of an official movement at a young age. It helped me see the many situations that occur in the industry which enabled me to make better moves for my future as I grew (lyrically, emotionally and physically).
Q. Can you remember the first time you performed, what was the response like?
A. The first time I performed was in Toronto at the Industry Show. I remember being nervous as hell and repeating to myself…”DON’T forget your lyrics kid!!”…We huddled up, prayed and that was it. The response was enough to keep me going! Mezziah (Older cousin) told me I did a good job, as I passed the mic to him and watched him tear up the rest of the show! It was cool…
Q. I have to admit, the first time I heard one of your tracks was the “Rocker” joint with CTB. Are you guys still tight, is there a reunion in the near future?
A. The entire CTB experience was real cool. I mean at the time, we were probably the hottest group in the city. CTB is more than just a group. There’s a history behind it, plus we all live in the same area. I mean we all keep in touch here and there, and salute one another. At the end of the day we all keep it 100! In regards to a reunion….we got collabo’s coming up!...I’m doing me at the moment!
Q. You got a unique style; it’s tough for peeps to classify you in a category. What do you say to those people that think you’re trying to be like Drake or any other artist?
A. I say thank you. I mean Drake is actually someone I listened to before he was “DRAKE”. That’s the funny thing. I met drake while back in Toronto at a hip hop summit and it was all love. I wrote and recorded “Guardian Angel” before he dropped So Far Gone. I only held on to it because I wanted to know which direction I was moving with it. I hear the Drake thing a lot, along with Cudi but to me…its more of an “original” sound. I guess what it comes down to is basically since both Drake and Cudi came out with their own different approach to the game, as did I, people decided to classify us all in the same category! …I’m aiming to be in the same categories at the award shows! Scream at me!
Q. They say that once you start to feel hate it’s cause dudes want to be where you are. Why do you think you’re the cat peeps love to hate?
A. With success comes hate and that’s something I figured out along the way. I mean, whether dudes hate because you have relation with their ex, or present (WHICH I CONSIDER A LARRY) the put it upon themselves to catch emotions. I believe that when one is doing something the other isn’t…hate will eventually surface! Success is a Gift and a Curse…that’s why I got it tatted on me…
Q. Let’s talk Mtl hip hop, why is it so hard to be a successful artist up north?
A. Its not hard at all! People talk as if it is, but that’s based on what they put out! It all depends on your work ethic, your surroundings and your product. Placement is key, and that’s why most don’t understand. The game is basically a business. You got to learn the business before you try to own that b*tch! Make sense?
Q. The first time I saw “Guardian Angel”; I was like wow real nice video. Were you involved in the creative aspect of the video?
A. It came down to brainstorming a concept the night before the shoot. It was me, Bunns (MY DJ GO DOWNLOAD HIS MIXTAPE WHITEOUT) and the Director downtown spitting out ideas back and forth. Finally we mixed all ideas into one, and came up with the video. So long story short, the visual was created overnight! Shout outs to 16 pads films…they got me looking real clean on screen!
Q. What do you want out of this game, how far are you willing to go to be…successful?
A. I want to be able to tell myself “I did it” before I tell anyone else. Once I do that, then the world will know who/what muGz is about. I’ve made a couple sacrifices for my music…lost some friends…met a lot of women…some real some fake..and even made enemies throughout this journey. It becomes life and that’s how far I’m willing to go..I’m willing to make this my life, and not a job..cause I HATE working…
Q. Morburn would like to thank muGz for chatting with us for a bit. We will be keeping a close eye on his career and future projects. muGz, you got any last words for the massive?
A. Black Rose! Just muGz
