Canadian hip hop has grown considerably in last couple of years. Often dismissed nationally, the early years of hip hop in Canada proved to be extremely difficult for artists to get their music to the public.
Artists such as Maestro Fresh Wes and Dream Warriors enjoyed successful but brief mainstream status. Once again, the structure was not there for other talented artists and the industry as a whole in Canada suffered. In 2001 Flow 93.5 became Canada’s first urban music station, opening the doors for Canadian urban artists across the country. Giving new light to the hip hop scene in Canada, Flow gave Canada what it needed….exposure.
Hip Hop Canada has become a valuable source for Canadian artists. It gives artists a platform to expose their music to the whole world to hear. Hip Hop Canada’s large online community also provides great discussions on a variety of topics important to Canadians in the hip hop music scene.
What we need are more of these types of websites, in order to keep building the Canadian hip hop scene. Websites such as Exclaim! Media Inc, Morburn Music and Ugsmag are excellent websites for information on the hip hop scene and music in general in Canada. While it still remains an uphill battle for Canadian artists, the recent success of artists such as Kardinal Offishall, Drake and K_naan offers a glimmer of hope to all of us who supports the scene and want to see hip hop thrive in the north.
